After the high of beating Diss 2 weeks ago it was a case of coming back down to earth with a bang.
Rochford were trounced by a fast and efficient Saffron Walden side who scored 10 tries in the process.
Saffron started their try spree from the start and by half time were 38-3 up scoring 6 tries and Rochford had only a Simon Ashton penalty to show for all their efforts.
The second half was more even with the visitors forwards looking strong but they did not have an answer to the pace of Saffron’s backs who were always dangerous with ball in hand.
Three second half tries by Tom Corbet (2) and Brett Smith, all converted by Ashton was scant consolation as the home team went over the line a further 4 times to rub salt into poor Rochford’s wounds .
The pluses from this disappointing game played in a howling gale were that the Rochford forwards continued to impress with their set and loose play and that the team was able to come back after such a disastrous first 40 minutes and lose the second session by only a 1 point difference.
Having said that they know that they were just not good enough on the day and will need to really pick themselves up again for next week when they host South Woodham.
