Another impressive victory scoring 11 tries to outplay a gutsy Cantabrigian outfit that never gave up and were always looking to run the ball when they could.

Unfortunately for them they did not see an enormous amount of that precious ball as Rochford kept control of it for most of this enjoyable match although there were periods when they seemed to take their foot off the pedal which allowed their opponents to get back into the game.

To their credit the visitors tried hard to attack Rochford when the occasion arose but another aspect of Hundred’s game is their defence which was put to good effect and not found wanting.

The Magnolia Road boys were always quick to counterattack from any breakdown to turn defence into attack.

From the off the home side attacked their opponents in all phases of the game and it was not long before long striding winger Tom Pickering went over for the first of his three tries, quickly followed by centre Tom Ashton running in one of his own.

Ashton converted that one as he did again when firebrand hooker Adam Ferrier scored a good try. The ball was being moved very fast from all angles with high kicks being followed up and pacey running and support play opened up the visitor’s defence time and again.

Stand-off Matthew Needham, who gets better with each game, was causing havoc with his darting runs and side steps and it was only fitting that he should score a fine individual effort.

Next up was young flanker Daniel Sowter to go over and Ashton added the two extra points.

Rochford’s set scrum held up well against a good tight Cantabs eight and managed to drive them on occasions and lively scrum half Ricki Gould was enjoying himself with pinpoint kicks and fast ball out to his backs.

The final score of the half came again from the excellent Tom Pickering who added another try which Ashton duly converted.

The Cantabs efforts were rewarded with a try of their own but Rochford turned around 38 -5 up at the break.

The boys in black continued to set the pace in the second session and who else but Pickering to go over for his hattrick before the other impressive wing Mitchell Bennett scored the first of his two tries with Tom Ashton doing the honours with the conversion.

Mitch Bennett’s was a classic winger’s try as stand in scrum half Steven Jay hoisted up the perfect high ball and Bennett, at speed, stormed through, caught the ball in the air, and outpaced the opposition to go in between the posts.

Mark Billings is one of those players that gives an extra dimension to a back division with his jinking ,elusive running from various angles and was instrumental in setting up a number of tries so it was pleasing when he scorched over for a great individual try under the posts which captain Matt Stewart converted.

Two further tries from Bennett and Jay with a conversion from Ashton completed the Rochford try fest but the Cambridge team did score another try through their driving maul but was scant consolation against such good opposition.

Overall a very gratifying afternoon where the lineouts were again dominated by Court-Rhind and especially Sam Fombo who had a storming game in the loose as well as the lineout.

Another player that put a marker down was young no.8 Joe Hurley who was everywhere all afternoon and is another big prospect for the future.

Many fine individual displays, too numerous to mention, but a further step in team confidence and cohesion although still a few things to sort out at training sessions it is looking good.

The momentum needs to be kept up and slack periods in a high scoring game need to be addressed when Rochford come up against a team that means business.

Wanstead next week could be an example.
