On a lovely sunny afternoon ideal for running rugby and a large crowd from both sides champions Bury St. Edmunds showed why they are so good with a fine display of fast, aggressive rugby.
Rochford also contributed to proceedings with a gritty performance and did themselves credit with some good rugby of their own but were given a lesson in how the game can be played at this level by their illustrious opponents.
After a promising start by the home side with some positive, attractive running Bury countered and their fast, supportive rugby opened up the Rochford defence and three quick converted tries followed.
The boys in black responded well and competed with fire in the loose and lineout but struggled in the set pieces against a big, skilled fitter and more disciplined eight.
This was shown to advantage in the way the Suffolk side’s defence was used as an attacking force as they drove Rochford players off loose ball and tackled with venom.
Rochford, themselves were no slouches in the tackle area but Bury’s support players always seemed to be on hand to continue moves.
Three more converted tries before half time took the score to 0 – 42 at the turn round.
The second half was a fiercely fought affair but the speed and strength of the visitors took its toll on the home team.Four more tries all converted except the last by Bury confirmed their superiority but Rochford were defiant to the last and showed some good skills of their own but for no reward.
Certainly a much better Rochford performance than the previous meeting at the beginning of this long season.
Veteran prop David Coombe was made captain for the day as he now retires after many distinguished years in the first team .
He has played in every game this season and showed today why he will be missed. He has been a credit to his club and himself over many seasons.
Thank you Dave and best wishes from us all.
