Playing in the blistering heat of what must have been the hottest October day in living history, Rochford 2nd XV were put to the sword by an impressive Southend side. Having suffered themselves as a result of late cry-offs on the Friday Southend still managed to field the majority of the team that has seen them maintain their impressive win loss record in Essex Merit League 1 over the years.
Unfortunately for Rochford they were once again out muscled up-front by the large Southend pack of Gavin, Dyton et al and in the first half succumbed to 3 catch and drive tries, typical of this Southend side, as well as a 5 metre scrum. The only reply being a well taken penalty kick from stand in captain Warner to reduce the arrears at half time Rochford 3 – 20 Southend.
The second half continued in much the same fashion with Southend putting the pressure on up front, and working some well taken tries. Rochford know that they aren’t the biggest side in the league and really need to start working hard on their technique at the set piece as well as ensuring they are first to the break down in order to secure some ball for the backs to use. On a positive note on the rare occasions that the Rochford backline did manage to get their hands on the ball they did take a lot of yards out of Southend and looked very dangerous, however this needs to be turned into points.
Rochford also welcomed back their new Captain Harry Chipper to the side, who has been out with injury throughout the pre-season but made a 2nd half appearance to shake off some ring rust and managed to score Rochfords only try of the game when he powered over the line from 10 yards out, created from some impressive open play by the boys from Magnolia Road, final score Rochford 8 – 39 Southend.
Next weekend sees Rochford travel to Chelmsford for their first League meeting this season, and are looking to get back to winning ways and will also be boosted by the return to action of Stemp, Churton, Head, Furnell, Chipper, Bacon and Cooke which will no doubt strengthen the side immensely and will be looking for an impressive performance by all.
