Report by Paul Head

Following the walk over win in round 1, Rochford Harts XV hosted a lively and strong May & Baker side who are a far better side than their league position suggests, in Round 2 of the Essex 2nd XV Cup.
On a wet drab afternoon at Magnolia Road Rochford looked to get the Cup run going and after a few last minute changes to the team they put in a solid performance to see them through to the Quarter Finals. The game was a fiery affair as well as one which was some what let down due to poor handling errors caused by the weather conditions as well as a number bad decisions made by Rochford when clear opportunities presented themselves.
Rochford appeared solid in the scrum and dominant in the line out with the likes of Goodliffe and Bacon securing their own line as well as stealing the majority of May & Bakers, which was setting a good platform for the backline to penetrate deep into the opposition half a number of times only to be prevented from scoring through their own efforts and a very greasy ball.
Eventually the break through came midway through the first half after a number of phases inside the M&B 22 Dolman managed to break the line and to open the scoring, converting his own try, Rochford 7 – 0 May & Baker.
May & Baker were strong though and resisted further attacks managing to turn ball over on a number of occasions as well as taking advantage of a number of penalties given against the home side from infringements at the ruck as well as the scrum with their kicking continually pinning Rochford back deep in their own half on numerous occasions.
Defence stood up well though and re won the ball when it counted to ensure no further score in the half.
Half time Rochford 7 – 0 may & Baker
The second half was more in Rochfords favour, strong line out and scrum work again set the platform for the lively backs to get their hands on the ball. Rochford would have had total domination if the penalty count was kept down again being penalised in the scrum when the opposition tight head kept standing up and Rochford were adjudged to of been at fault for this ??
Pressure eventually told though and midway through the second half Lacey managed to pick the ball up in space to see off a couple of cover tackles and make his way over the line again duly converted by Dolman. Rochford 14 – 0 May & Baker.
Although May & Baker never looked like breaking the defensive line too often they did battle hard and kept themselves in the game for the full 80 minutes with some excellent phase work and handling skills however this all went with out reward and it was Rochford who had the last say when Hill came off his blind wing received the ball out wide and went over in the corner to finish off the match, Rochford 19 – 0 May & Baker.
Overall good encounter given the conditions and one which sees Rochford move onto the Quarter Finals of the Essex Cup in the New Year
