The match started with a great kick off from Ethan Hepton which evaded the Westcliff defenders and bounced and found touch by the Westcliff try line. And it was there that the team spent most of the half.
The resulting line out was well won by Alfie Chatfield and Jack Cahill and the ball spread wide by Callum Charalambous to Corey Lazell and Callum Stanley but the boys just couldn’t get the ball over the line.
As the game continued Westcliff began to make changes to bring more of their A side onto the pitch and the play began to move back towards the Rochford half. Again the defence was good and the boys began to think more about positioning round rucks. Line outs were won against the throw and the scrum began to hold its own.
Westcliff eventually scored with a not very pretty, but very effective style of play and began to dominate the game. Being able to switch from an expansive game to one that is not so pretty but wins the game is the sign of a good team. And that’s what we have, a good team that is improving every week. Bring on Basildon.
