On a wet pitch, both teams battled hard for possession, and if anything Rochford looked more likely to score first, often getting near to the Romford line with some powerful central attacks. There was some excellent tackles made by the Rochford squad, with Oliver especially providing many of those ‘crunch’ tackles. With Adam H being quick in the rucks, and both Adam B and Karl showing great battling qualities in close play, both forward lines fought for supremacy.
The second half was similar to the first, with Rochford battling hard for possession, with William D and Michael being very strong in mid field. At times, however, we seemed to just stare endlessly at the ball when it was on the ground. On one occasion a spectator was actually heard to say that ‘I could have walked onto the pitch and picked it up by now! ‘ because the ball had been there so long. As one of the Romford backs began to cause disruption in our defence, and with some tackles being missed Romford went ahead, and alas soon added a second try.
Although many of the lads continued to battle, our chance of success had gone, and with successful conversions Romford secured victory with a 14 – 0 score line.
