The game started quickly with Basildon immediately putting Rochford under pressure and winning a scrum close to the try line. Basildon clearly had a bigger pack and dominated the first scrum getting the ball out quickly and scoring the opening try after only 3mins.
Despite the early try a determined Rochford stepped up their game at the restart and began to put Basildon under pressure.
With a battling forwards performance from Sarah J, Ben, Liam, Regan, and Luke, Rochford were beginning to win the turnover ball and were quick to the breakdown.
The commitment was then rewarded with Luke powering over to score for Rochford. Jamie then stepped up and levelled the score with a perfectly placed conversion. The first half ends level at 7-7.
After a huddled team talk from Steve, a motivated Rochford start the second half brightly winning a scrum close to the Basildon try line, and despite the difference in pack size hold their ground getting the ball out to Jacob. Several fast passes later Sam darts between the Basildon line and scores Rochford’s second try. Again Jamie steps up and gets the conversion.
After the restart a resilient Basildon get back into the game making several dangerous breaks toward the Rochford try line. However, Rochford are up to the defensive challenge with Lewis, Matt N, Devan, and Johnny all making good tackles.
Rochford begin to gain ground with some driving runs from Sarah J, Luke, and Max, and after winning the turnover close to the Basildon line, Liam breaks out from the second row evading several tackles to score Rochford’s third try. Showing great consistency Jamie gets the conversion but this time decides to land the ball in the adjoining field.
Basildon get a late try after winning the scrum and convert to leave the result 21 -14 to Rochford.
Although there were individual highlights, this game was all about a spirited Rochford team performance with every player showing commitment against an improved physical Basildon side. Well done Rochford.
