Match report for Chelmsford game

After the impressive cup win against Bancroft, Rochford returned to league action with a home game against Chelmsford which took place on a beautiful spring day.

Rochford were missing a few regulars due to half term skiing activities and injuries, but were still able to field a strong 19 against a Chelmsford team keen to avenge two defeats in our meetings this season. Rochford started strongly despite a sliced kick off and started to press the Chelmsford defence and soon took the lead. Rochford won a ruck in our own half, Kieran picked up the ball and weaved his way through to score. The lead was soon doubled courtesy of a flowing move across the pitch though Daniel, Kieran, Luke P and Max before feeding Alex to score in the corner. From the resulting kick off, Freddie took a great catch and weaved through before passing to Christian to score, and again from the next kick off, Kieran caught the ball and ran through to score.

Chelmsford started to press but the Rochford defence held firm and continued to build from the back with Oakley making some good ground before feeding Luke P who made a great run before passing to Max to score. Tom playing in an unfamiliar position of hooker, helped Rochford control the scrums and also made some strong runs through, allowing Christian to add to the scoring. Max then returned a kick to take the score to 7-0. Connor and Freddie made some great runs before Daniel H completed the scoring for the first half, finishing a good move straight from the training ground.

Rochford rolled on the substitutes and unusually, there was a change of Referee as well. Chelmsford provided strong defence and kept the score at 8-0 for a while, until Connor powered through. Some great runs were made by Johnny, Johnny O which allowed Freddie to score. Johnny D then scored after a good run from Kai.

Rochford continued to repel Chelmsford, and further extended their lead after a good catch from Dan H, who passed to Christian who made good ground before passing to Kyle to score his second try of the day. Kyle then returned the favour to allow Christian to add his third. Soon after Dan H kicked through and Ben nearly touched down but Jamie was able to pick up and score.

Rochford, completed their scoring through a strong run from Tom, followed by a similar effort from Luke P after a good catch from Alex, then good interplay enabled Kai to score in the corner. After another good catch from Tom, the ball found its way to Kyle who showed a great turn of pace running from the halfway line to score

Special mention must go to Dan P who was tenacious in an unfamiliar Number 8, and Ethan who got in some great positions on the wing and made some good yardage, hence they were voted our men of the match.

Credit must go to Chelmsford for continuing to probe and never letting their heads go down and continue to play in the spirit of the game.
