Rochford Hundred ready for 'toughest trip of the season'
By Chris Phillips
ASTON Bevans-Royston wants Rochford Hundred to build on their unbeaten start to the season when they head to Blackheath in National League Two East tomorrow.
Hundred have triumphed in their opening two games of the campaign.
But Bevans-Royston feels this weekend’s clash will be extremely tough.
“This weekend I feel will be the toughest trip of the season,” said Bevans-Royston.
“To even see Blackheath outside of National One seems strange and I’m sure they don’t plan on being out for more than one season.
“We’ve watched their tape and they are exactly what I knew they would be.
“They’re extremely organised, they have a great set piece utilising their big ball carrying pack and their backline aren’t too bad either. “In reality for us this is a complete free hit.
“No one will expect to see anything other than a Blackheath win but what a chance for this young group to go and record yet another big upset in the national leagues.”
Rochford will also be heading into the game on a high having already beaten both Tonbridge Juddians and Westcliff this season.
And Bevans-Royston has been boosted by the back to back victories.
“The start of the season has been amazing,” said the prop-forward.
“You can’t really ask for much more than 10 points out of 10.
“We had a tough season last year with so many players missing through long term injuries.
“We then lost a few senior players, had a disjointed pre-season and still have an injury list that’s incredibly long.
“We rolled into the first week with such a young side so to get the performance we did was unbelievable.
“That really boosted the confidence and morale of the team.”
And that also led to victory against Westcliff last time out.
“We knew it would be a tough, physical game,” said Bevans-Royston.
“It’s exactly how you would predict a derby to be and it was exactly that.
“They played a great tactical game, taking away a lot of our strengths and really made it a tight contest.
“We battled through and came away with another five points.
“Regardless of how ugly the win was I’ll take it.”
And Rochford will now be aiming for more as they bid to secure another season at this level.
“For the rest of the season, first and foremost the main objective is clearly to stay in this league,” said Bevans-Royston.
“But if we continue to improve week on week and continue developing this exciting young squad, plus the fact we have so many injured players still to come back into the squad, this could be a really good season for Rochford.
“Anything around mid table would be a real achievement in such a tough league.”
