So near yet so far for the Rams !

After only 4 mins of play The Rams found themselves 5 points down after a good passage of play from O.B. and some shakey tackling from the home team.
Dave Isaacs (acting capt on the day) rallied the team round and some brilliant running from Kev Hughes (yes, you heard correctly !) who then off-loaded the ball into the hands of Richard George who in turn scored in the corner. Dave I. then slotted over 2 extra points with the aid of the cross bar. Rams 7 - O.B 5
The match then swung to and fro for the next half hour or so. O.B'S then scored a try under the posts which was the result of some very poor miss tackles from numerous Rams players, this try was then converted to take O.B. into a 7-12 lead.
Rochford once again pulled it together and very soon were camped on the opposition 5 meter line. A scrum awarded to the Rams was pulled down which led to penalty, this was turned into 5 points with a try from Dave I. who was unlucky not to convert.
Chris Morgan kept the home side in with a chance with some fine play and excellent cover tackles. Both teams going in at the half way mark with 12 points a piece.
The second half started well for the home team. Both forwards and backs linking up and playing some great rugby that was a joy to watch from the touch line. One play in particular stands out and this was carried out by Richard George and Chris Morgan who ran half the pitch inter passing brilliantly unluckily, this not produce any points but did result in Chris having to leave the field of play with a knee injury.
Old Brentwood responded and 10 mins later it was they who opened the second half scoring. A well taken ball and some nifty footwork, dancing in and out of Rams miss tackles gave the away team a try under the posts, which was then converted. Rams 12-O.B's 19.
The injuries continued for the Rams, Kev Hughes having to retire with a pulled Ham-string, probably from his previous splintering burst of speed run down the touch-line?
Did the home team have anything left in their tanks? You bet they did. Russ Clarke, Sharkey and John Archer played out of their socks. The support play was fantastic, bulldozing their way through the opposition, rucking, mauling it was sight to behold. The pressure on the O.B's was unending and the eventual outcome was inevitable. John Archer, ball under his arm rammed on and on into the lines of the away team, like a bull with a red rag in front of him, head down and legs pumping the try line drew ever closer. John was almost at ground zero, when, as everybody who knows him could predict what was going to happen... Johns speed got the better of him and like a giant wave crashing onto a beach he 'tumbled' over himself. BUT, this is where the professional player in John came out, just before he smashed head first into the try line creating a crater the size of a small county he managed to get a pass away and gave Dave I. a walk over try. Well done John, Dave then converted to level the scores 19 all.
Rochford piled on the pressure once more. An infringement inside the opposition 22 gave Dave I. another chance with his boot. Dave did not let the team down. Rams now led for the first time 22-19.
The Rams, now with the final whistle not to far away continued with the onslaught, forwards supporting each other and backs producing some wonderful open play. The play was firmly in the opposition 22 when from a well worked move from the forwards the ball was delivered to Dave I. who without any time to think slotted the ball between the uprights for a 3 point drop goal...25-19. Surely this must be the end of the game??
Old Brentood never gave up and with minutes to go were inside the Rams 22 meter line. Still time to play. O.B'S then got the ball to the 'Dancing Back' from earlier who once again wormed his way through miss tackle after high tackle after miss tackle. A try under the posts was easily converted to give the away team a 25-26 lead. This was the last play of the game.
It was a very good game to watch and one the home team should have won (again) but for some woeful miss tackles.
Well done to Old Bretwood for not giving up. Thanks to Tony Williams who gave his all for the opposition. Big Well Done to Dave Isaacs for his full bag of points (1 missed conv, but never mind !) 20 points out of 25 BIG HAND Dave..
My M.O.M again could easily have gone to a number of players but with a lot of thought it goes to Johnny Archer. fantastic runs, excellent support play and dogged determination within sight of the try line. WELL DONE JOHN !
