The game was played in windy conditions but this had little affect on the quality of play. The first half was very evenly matched with neither side really taking the game by the scruff the neck. Rochford eventually took the initiative and scored first followed by a well worked try from M&B. Two more tries, one being converted by Don Faulkner saw Rochford going into the second half with a 17-5 lead. Having lost Dave Prosser at scrum half with a ligament injury, John Johnson took over the role with confidence.
The second half went well for the Rams, more substitutes followed with the likes of Johnny Archer. P.V.B. Scouse, Dave and Mike O coming on. The forwards played together as one unit, they rucked and mauled and supported each other brilliantly. No-one in the pack played more heroically and put himself about more than Russ Clarke. With 2 tries to his name and the thought of buying a JUG for the boys he never stopped. Soon the 3rd try was his and the JUG ours. Well done Clarkey !
The "CHUNKIES" were not the only ones in this game. The backs enjoyed a fast open free flowing game. Good support play by all concerned, a special mention to Wally McAlpine for his leadership, lots of talking and encouragement to his fellow "Whippets". Two tries by Kev Hughes and one by Ollie Bedford saw Rochford push further into an unbeatable lead. Conversions by Don Faulkner and Mike O sealed the fate of M & B. The final score: Rochford 36 - May & Baker 5.
Special thanks to Jurgen Reid for stepping in at the last minute and reffing the game.
Big up for the May & Baker team for playing the game in good spirit and not giving up. All of them played well and didn't stop until the final whistle, well done guys.
BIG HAND to Clarkey for 3 tries....my "MAN OF THE MATCH", collecting the shirts AND receiving the 'BEAR', (we wont say why he left with Mr.Hugs, but it was outrageous! No arm was was meant, but we cannot wait to see the pictures?).
Regards Mike O'.
