After two weeks without a game due to the opposition being unable to field a side, Rochford took on Harlow in a rearranged game at Magnolia Road on a bright autumnal morning.
The full squad was in attendance proudly displaying their new kit, emblazoned with the name of our generous sponsor, Rascals Nursery, and the team under the tutelage of Rob, Andy, Steve and Graham, as Russ was away at the Upminster Festival.
Rochford started strongly and were able to make better use of the width of the pitch, surging into a half time lead of 6 -0 (30-0) courtesy of tries from Jack Dunn, Harri Lacey (both 2), Luke Pindani and Kieran Butler, though this would not have been possible without tenacious tackling in the middle of the park from Max Pitkin. Harlow came very close to registering a try on several occasions, but could not quite break through.
Widespread changes were made at half time to give all the squad game time, with Jack and Harri agreeing to run the wings for Harlow who were short on numbers on the day, only having one sub.
The second half was a lot more even, with a number of Rochford players adopting unfamiliar positions. The teams traded tries with Captain Luca weighing in with 2 and Christian, who had been pacing the touchline like a caged Tiger in the first half, bursting through on several occasions, culminating in two tries as well.
Good breaks from Luke Coldwell, Freddie and Brendan Shead gained good yardage, but resolute defencing from Harlow meant they shaded the second half 5-4 (25-20), however the final score ended as 50-25 in Rochford’s favour.
The game was played in a great spirit, excellently refereed by Tom, and thanks go out to Harlow for making the long trip on a Sunday morning for a 10.30 start.
Next up a friendly away to Maldon next Sunday, come on Rochford !
Man of the match picked by Harlow was Luke Pindani
