The U14s Begin Their Essex Cup Campaign

As Autumn descends on us it was nice to play in a similar rural setting to ourselves to a very hospitable club valuing the traditions of Rugby, Billericay were without doubt the biggest team that we have played with 5 huge lads in the scrum who wouldn't have looked out of place couple of years up. They also have a few boys that are representing the county I initially worried when I spoke to a coach of another team who informed me that they were big and fast, they have also claimed the scalp v Wanstead, who in my opinion have been the best team that we have played against so it was important for the boys to keep the standards they had set the previous week.

A solid start from a Billericay kick off the game almost immediately went into Scrum, from the above stats you can tell instantly how hard the battle was with easily the most scrums we have had in a game laden with won penalties, Carries rucks and mauls which made for a highly entertaining game, most of it being within around the middle. Billericay made a couple of horrific mistakes were they had gone over the line but from pressure had dropped the ball but had put in the right hand corner(six of there 8 tries on the one side) and opened the scoring.

Our kick off immediately gave us our first burst of pressure and we took the game to our opponents with Omar eventually scoring under the posts with a conversion we where in the lead, R100 then sustained a solid period of the game with an advantage, the game which had started well then roared into life, literally as two Spitfires flew overhead . 5-7. The next passage of play was wonderfully condensed and Billericay actually began to dominate the scrum and from a line out got there noses in front again 10-7 with a try again in the right hand corner.

Billericay then had there most dominant phase from the rucks and mauls, however we won one of their scrums and the tide turned for what was the most beautiful 5 minutes of Rochford100 rugby as the boys took carry after carry, penalty after penalty , yard after yard, the Spitfires returned and every one of the pack wanted a run, a run forward and push to the line. This for me was the best passage of Rugby we have played we turned the screw and as Billericay began to sing "hold, hold" our boys responded magnificently and were awarded a penalty try, a fabulous team effort, with the Billericay coach remonstrating his players , it was game on 22-14 game on.

Sadly we conceded a cheap try in the final minutes of the half after we had pushed and won so much possession with carries , crisp passing so 27-14 looked a little flattering to our opponents.

We also conceded another cheap try at the beginning of the second half and along with another try soon after with a few too many missed tackles the game was in effect beyond our grasp, nevertheless it is to our boys enormous credit that there heads didn't drop, they dug in and remarkably we began to win scrum after scrum, we won turn overs and won maul after maul , with our pack all having a go gaining yard after yard.

The last ten minutes was a very rewarding finale , the boys I believed knew that there opponents pack was spent. We scored a superb try from the kick off with Monkey going over ,We had one substitute to there five all used , however we looked fresh , enthusiastic and Billericay had also stopped singing when defending, Our crisp passing returned as did some monster tackling all over the park, inevitably we scored our fourth try with the last phase of play.

There coaches were very complimentary to our team, saying how hard, what a game and how impressed they had been.

For the second week in succession I could mention many , many players and there performance, Nathan gave a true captains performance and stuck up for his players, rightly asking to talk to the referee, Darcy gave a breath-taking performance in the pack and back , Eathan at scrum gave a very mature performance instrumental in all our recycling the ball and was rightly man of the match. Full credit to all those in the scrum fabulous display .... Conor completed all conversions and a Billericay coach expressed how impressed he was , the try scorers deserved the plaudits and Freddy made a very positive debut. However again I would say an excellent team performance.
