Our boys played well and apart from the scrum struggling a little bit, the forwards were at least trying to move the ball forward and were more mobile than of late. Callum, who has continued to improve this season, was getting stuck in and Tom Finch was running forward with ball in hand.
Westcliff kept coming at us, but good Rochford defence continued to hold them at bay. That was until a Westcliff player broke through and was just brought down near our line. A desperate tackle forced the knock-on creating a Rochford scrum. It was this scrum that finally gave Westcliff their try, which really wasn’t a try at all as the Westcliff player who scored was a mile off side. To be fair Westcliff had won the scrum. Our boys kept their heads up and were moving the ball around. We were almost over on a few occasions but couldn’t quite finish.
The second half saw Westcliff try and put us away and almost did but for a huge tackle by Ewan Hardie on the wing. After that it was all Rochford, Matt Dobson was breaking away but the Westcliff defence held strong, so credit to them.
A disappointing result but as already mentioned, I thought the boys played quite a good game.
