This match was always going to be more of a challenge as Thurrock were physically much bigger than even the Wanstead front row and the heat was beginning to sap the strength of our boys.
Thurrock are a big well organised side and they immediately put Rochford under pressure and it was only a matter of time before they scored their first try. They began to push Rochford back into their own half when Nicholas Campen broke through their line and raced to the line to score. Liam Baker again put the kick over. Thurrock scored again before half time and went into the break ahead.
Persistent Thurrock pressure had put them a matter of a few yards from the Rochford line when the ball made its way to Nicholas Campen behind the try line who went on a lung busting run. Only a late high tackle on half way stopped him from running the length of the pitch and while he was hyper-ventilating and receiving attention from a coach Liam Baker took a quick tap-penalty and ran the other half of the pitch to score. Liam then scored his third conversion of the day for a 100% record.
Expect a call from Martin Johnson if Jonny Wilkinson doesn’t improve.
The match ended 26-14 to Thurrock but the boys had given everything in almost sub-tropical conditions. Already we can see improvements on last season. Well done lads.
