The match started with a midfield scrap that neither side looked like winning, and little territory was gained. The scrum was working well with Ben Cannon coming in to join Tyler Scott at prop and Christopher Martin replacing Harry Bennett at hooker. With Braintree pushing into the Rochford half the ball was passed out wide where it was dropped and knocked on. Not waiting for a whistle Callum Hishon took the advantage, scooped up the ball and ran almost the length of the pitch with three Braintree players in pursuit to score Rochford’s first try of the day.
The second half began with Rochford on top and Braintree defending valiantly. Another cross field move with the ball being passed purposefully to the left wing saw Callum go on another run only this time he was tackled five metres from the line. Some excellent support play from Christopher Hastings at full-back allowed him to pick up the ball and force himself over the line to double the score.
It was now all Rochford and Braintree were unable to get out of their own half. A great run by Jack Chandler on the right wing through two tackles saw him take the third and set the ball up for Corey Lazell to ruck over. Christopher Martin, acting as scrum half, began the move that saw the ball passed along the line to Callum at left wing who touched down in the far corner.
How’s that for expansive rugby, Mr Johnson?
The team were ecstatic at the final whistle and deserved the applause they got as they came off. It wasn’t just a win but a great team performance.
